Bury My Body

Going out to the cod trap use to be our lifestyle

Hauling on jigger lines made a days pay

Till the fisheries minister allowed foreign trawlers

To forsake our waters and drag jobs away

So we left for the mainland missing the island

Living on odd jobs that we’ve chose to toil

But the rocks in our souls when we die just one favour

Bury our bodies in Newfoundland soil

We left our homeland way back in the 80’s

Leaving the island was so hard to do

In search of an income we came to the mainland

Sacrificed friendships and families too

So we’re out in the mainland missing the island

And living on odd jobs that we’ve chose to toil

But the rocks in our souls when we die just one favour

Bury our bodies in Newfoundland soil

And the oil companies came with the world’s largest drill rigs

Offered a fortune but gave you so few

Still we flocked to our homeland only to find out

That prayers don’t get answered and dreams don’t come true

So we’re back on the mainland still missing the island

And living on odd jobs that we’ve chose to toil

But the rocks in our souls when we die just one favour

Bury our bodies in Newfoundland soil
