Tell Me, Mister

A little girl sat by the road as the soldiers quickly passed
She pulled a soldier by the arm and tearfully she asked
Why do people fight those wars that no one seems to win
Why can't they love each other and everyone be friends

Our little town was quiet once - my friends lived down the way
But now they're gone and I can't find no one here to play
Our playground's filled with people walking back and forth with guns
Why do thay want to do away with little children's fun

They came and took my daddy a day or two ago
And they laid my mommy in the ground by the church along the road
We loved each other dearly, but I just don't understand
Why God made love be wiped away and the world be filled with pain

Tell me, mister, you should know, if you've time before you go
Can't you tell the man who runs the more that we don't want no more
I wish that I could talk to him. I'd tell him that the world
Was made for love and peace and dreams of little boys and girls

The soldier pulled his arm away, his face was grim and tight
But deep down in his heavy heart he knew the child was right
When next he came along the road the little girl was dead
As he covered up her tear-stained face, he remembered what she'd said

Tell me, mister, you should know, if you've time before you go
Can't you tell the man who runs the more that we don't want no more
I wish that I could talk to him. I'd tell him that the world
Was made for love and peace and dreams of little boys and girls
I'd tell him that the world was made for little boys and girls
